“From the East: Challenges and Opportunities Facing Black-owned Media in Atlantic Canada”

Brian Daly

Presented at the “State and Future of Ethnic Media in Canada” Panel

Canadian Sociological Association Conference, Dalhousie University, Halifax NS, June 11th, 2026.

Abstract: At least five Black-owned publications have folded in Atlantic Canada since 2022 amid relatively small subscriber bases, limited sponsorship, and YouTube footprints below the platform’s revenue threshold, a media ecology analysis has found. Meanwhile, nine other Black-owned outlets in the four eastern Canadian provinces remained active as of July 2026, with most displaying active revenue streams and consistent, community-centred content that included journalism. The findings emerged from Year 1 of the study From the East: Challenges and Opportunities Facing Black-owned Media in Atlantic Canada, led by Prof. Brian Daly from the University of King’s College School of Journalism, Writing & Publishing in Halifax.
